Obituary

William G. Burg, 85, of Penn Yan, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the age of 85. A lifelong resident of the community, Bill graduated from Penn Yan Academy with the Class of 1958. He dedicated much of his life to public service, most notably as a proud and active member of the Penn Yan Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years. During his tenure, he held several leadership positions, primarily serving as Secretary of the Ellsworth Hose Company. He also founded and served as General Chairman of the PYFD 400 Club, a role he passionately fulfilled for over 30 years. Even after his active service, he remained an exempt member of the department. Bill and his beloved wife, Joann, were the proud owners and operators of Mac's Dairy Ice Cream Store and Mini-Golf, which they successfully ran together for 23 years. Their business became a cherished part of the Penn Yan community. Bill's career spanned several decades and roles, beginning as a sales agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance. He then worked for Eastman Kodak in Rochester for 25 years, serving in both the Fire Department and the Security Section, retiring as a Senior Patrol Driver. In retirement, he continued to serve the community by offering wine tours and providing medical transportation through Keuka Taxi. Bill loved the outdoors and cherished time spent with his family. He enjoyed camping trips, deer hunting, fishing, and attending local high school sporting events. He and Joann also took many memorable trips to Las Vegas and the Outer Banks, often surrounded by their entire family. He will be remembered for his strong sense of service, deep love for his family, and unwavering commitment to his hometown. Bill was predeceased by his parents, George and Doris (Dinehart) Burg; his paternal grandparents, Lorenzo and Estella Burg; maternal grandparents, Charles and Ora (Meade) Dinehart; his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Howard Pedersen; and his in-laws, Joseph and Margaret Townsend, Mary and Walter Brown, James and Sandra Townsend, Joseph Townsend Jr., Gordy Wilber, and Pete and Pat Townsend. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joann Townsend, and their Yorkie, Stella. He is also survived by his daughters, their spouses, and their children: Becki (Troy) Bailey, Jennifer (Mike) Alessi, and Amy (Keith) Myhand. Bill was especially proud of his five grandchildren: Ryan Bailey, Megan Bailey, Dr. Madie Alessi, Joey Alessi, and Jackson Myhand. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Wilber, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, August 10, 2025 from 10:30 am-12:00 pm at Townsend-Wood & Zinger Funeral Home, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan, NY.
